Interactive Poetry Notebooks!

It is no secret that we love our poetry notebooks in my classroom.  They are a treasure!  Over the last month or so our level of engagement has gone through the roof!  We started interactive poetry notebooks!

First we do a whole group sort.

Then the students duplicate the sort in their notebooks.

We finally finished the unit... Whew!  It took a long time, but I am excited to have it complete.
Click on the picture to find this unit.  It is currently discounted.

This is a supplement to these monthly poetry units.  You can purchase the monthly units individually or as a complete year.

Thank goodness for snow days!

  2. I have been trying to do interactive journals for years, but one thing always stands in the way of successful journal, gluesticks that really stick! Do you have a secret for that?

    1. The best glue sticks are made by Scotch 3M. I usually stock up at Costco, but I ran out. So we are using some of my back up sticks. I agree, they are not that good. If the weather gets better, I am headed back to Costco to stock up.

  3. I love the bundle though I have not used all of them yet- one of my favorite poems is Oviparous.. I am thinking that you did a Hibernation poem- am I confusing your work with someone else's work? Right now being a bear and hibernating would not be so bad- the weather is very cold just now and I am trying to get lots of report writing done... Thanks for all that you do to share and support other teachers. It is much appreciated. Regards, Anna

  4. About how many notebooks do you plan for each child in a year? I use the spiral notebooks but they don't hold up.
Time to bite the bullet and get the composition books. :)

    1. I know! The spiral pages rip out and I want to cry. Right now I have 3 (math journals, poetry, thinking journals [reading, science combined]). I think I am going to run different colored duct tape down the spines so my students can find them quick. So green for math, purple for poetry, and blue for thinking. Next year it will be perfect! (don't we always say that?)

  5. Is three enough per child for the whole year?

    1. Yes, my books have 100 sheets. For the poems, they need 2 sheets per poem (they use front and back of each sheet), so they have enough room in their notebook for about 50 poems. You have to teach them to not skip pages.

    1. I am made it! It is in my Facebook Fan Freebie file. Just go to my FB page (use your computer, not a tablet or phone because you won't be able to see the file on those). Then click on the Freebie file.

  9. Aloha Ms. Deedee! I love your poetry and used it last year in Kinder (well and just about everything else I could get my little hands on!). I am now in first grade and have the "high kids" (we unfortunately homogeneously group for LA-but will keep our kids all day next year!!) and am stumped on what to do with them to fulfill our ccss poetry quota and meet everything else our district is requiring of us. I want to use all that you have but some kids are reading into 4th and 5th grade and are beyond many of the activities-the poems are perfect. I don't mean this to be insulting at all because I LOVE everything you do. I was just wondering if maybe...by any chance...there is a bump up from the kinder into first grade standards ?? Hint hint? I know I could extend but you have such cute graphics and honestly I can't crank it out like you do :) my time between my own littles and my class of littles takes just about everything I have to offer....lol. Just a thought :) if you are taking requests. Thank you for all you do!

  10. Will you have materials to go with your Campfire Song freebie as well? My Kinders LOVE this poem/song and I love the idea of having these supplementary materials to go with it!
