I feel the need for SPEED!

Last week I wrapped up my assessments for the 3rd quarter. Here is what I noticed.   My babies conceptually understand addition and subtraction, but now we need to work on automaticity!

Research tells us that students must be fluent with adding and subtracting in order to free up their mental energy for higher level thinking... so this got me thinking.

I will continue to focus on the concepts of adding and subtracting, but in order to meet the needs of my little mathematicians AND meet this CCSS:

GULP!

I need to do more!

So one weekend plus a snow day later...

I have it discounted until tomorrow night, but you can win it tonight by hitting "Like" on my Facebook page and leaving a comment on my Facebook page... Easy... right?

We have a winner!

Fly Me To The Moon...

This will be a photographic reflection of some of the awesome fun we had last week!

1. My students love STACKS!  This is a game I invented that is sort of like a solitaire-ish game.  It really makes them think strategically!  BTW...they are learning at the same time.

2.  We had a little math journal fun!
3.   And we had several versions of Sequence going in my room depending on the student's needs.   Yes...I still have a few who benefit from beginning sounds.   Here are some of the other versions:

4.  We then took off to the moon!   We read a few books on the moon, then completed the Moon Matter of Facts from Cara Caroll's cute unit.  We also made her phases of the moon mobile.   Way easier than I thought it was going to be!   Whew!!!

We made craters and wrote about it.  I'm pretty sure they loved EVERYTHING about this activity!!!   Even my shell collection went in!
Then we surveyed the class to decide if we wanted to go to the moon.   I loved their responses.

Top row
[I would like to go to the moon] because I could hit a rock and it wouldn't hurt my knuckles.
[I would not like to go to the moon] because it would cost us a lot of money.

Bottom row
[I would like to go to the moon] because I could do back flips.
[I would not like to go to the moon] because I would be away from family and friends.

5.  I found a fun video on You Tube. It was a little quick for us to get all of the lyrics, but it got us humming a long.  We listened to it a few times during the week... so it sunk in!

And who does not love Bill Nye?

For more adventures in the great unknown, I highly recommend this unit.  I love it!   I had not intended to study the solar system, but Sarah's engaging unit is on my list!

Peek at my Week-Spring, Moons...Linky

I am pretty much in love with Cara's Moon Unit!   I am excited to work with this in my class next week.  You can see her activities in my content are this week... awesome!

and I was excited to see Growing Kinders new CVC {e} set was available. I will be using this in my small group word work over the next few weeks.

Here are my plans for next week.

Naturally, you may link up!

Shades of Gray

Easy now... it is not THAT Shades of Gray!

A few weeks ago we had the most amazing assembly at school.
The assembly started out with a Josh Gray and Brett Cue speaking about perseverance and about believing  in yourself.
Then we went outside.

Boys and girls...do not try this at home.
I really can not wrap my head around how this is possible.

 Oy!
 It was insane!
They finished the show and he took our principal for a spin on his bike!   Brave woman!

Then the guys stayed after school and signed autographs forEVER!  They were mobbed by our students, and yet, a smile never left their faces.  Did I mention that they gave their time freely... as in...they did not charge one cent?

These guys are hoping to be invited to participate in the X Games.

Help these awesome guys out and... like his Facebook page.

Talking about writing in Transylvania!

Yesterday was amazing here in Pennsylvania! My students have been referring to this trip as my Transylvania trip! Ha!

This trip started a little rocky... I got to the airport in St. Louis to find out that my connecting flight through D.C. had been cancelled due to weather, but they could get me to Harrisburg by 2:00pm on Thursday...AHH!!!   I was due to start my presentations at 9:00am.    Pan-ic!  Thus began the geography lesson I WISHED I would have payed attention to.  After involving the entire ticket agent counter at United Airlines, we decided that I could fly to Allentown and rent a car to drive to Harrisburg (like... less than 100 miles away).  That would get me to my hotel room by 2:00am-ish... I can do that!

Delay, delay, delay... My flight landed in Harrisburg at 3:00am-ish, the Hertz guy STAYED 3 extra hours to make sure I got my car (love him), and I made it to my hotel and was tucked in by 5:00am.

Seriously!   I can NOT make this up.  I felt like I was IN one of THOSE movies.

Here is what I learned... Pennsylvania teachers and Hertz rental car guys are AWESOME!

Onward!

One of the things that I have started in my class was adding a micro mini-lesson to my writing.  After I have finished my whole group mini-lesson, I invite a few students to stay on my carpet so we can do some goal setting or reteaching. I try to group the kiddos who have similar needs.

Click here to get your free copy

Here is what it look like!

I laminate this page and write on it with an Expo marker.  It is easy to update each day.   As you can see, I meet with them on the carpet one day...then the following day I confer with them.  In this way, I can follow up on the goal they set.  It helps the student and me focus.

We are almost done with unit 6 of our writers workshop series. This upcoming unit will be on zooming in on smaller narrative stories.

**Book making is introduced

Have a great Friday!
