Is Bigger Better?

I thought about calling this post, "Does size really matter?"   But then I reconsidered!

So... I have been thinking about getting a new laminator.  I have had the same one for a few years after my blog angels told me about the Scotch Laminator.  I love being able to laminate on the weekends, but I wondered if I paid a little bit more, would I be able to laminate more pages per minute.

Flash forward to this weekend when I saw this laminator at Sam's Club.

Click on the image to see it on Sam's Club's web site.

It certainly was bigger and would allow me to laminate larger pages.  It weighs a ton!   I felt confident it would do the job.

Whomp! Whomp!... not so much.  It *may* have been slower than my Scotch brand AND almost all of my laminating peeled! Boo!!!

I am going to stick with this baby for now.

Click on the picture to see this on Amazon's web site.
This machine is over two years old and it still does a better job than the big daddy!

Here is my question for you...

Do you have a home laminator?   Have you found one you are in love with?

  1. I have a Scotch laminator just like yours and I absolutely love it. And boy does it get used a lot, too! Hopefully you can return the big one and get your money back... good luck!

  2. i have 2 scotch laminators! One exactly like yours and then the newer model of the same brand. I like the original one (the one in your picture) they both work very good...but the second model is less forgiving with how you get your paper in it...it also turns off if it is not used within a certain time. but when i am laminating lots of stuff...i just stuff them side by side and it cuts my time in half. I have two quite by accident. I was laminating for a friend and HER stuff got stuck....i had to take it apart and turn it on at the same time to get the stuff out...in meantime though, i had to make a midnight (literally) run to walmart to buy another one...they of course had the second model on display instead of the one i had...but since her items had to be done quickly (mother's day) i bought it. it is/was one of the "lucy and ethel" kind of stories...

  3. I actually have 3 laminators. And, I usually have all 3 going at the same time! My favorite is the one from My Binding. It laminates each page in just under a minute. My second favorite is the Scotch, like yours, and my least favorite is the one I got from Scholastic Book Clubs, using my points. It's super duper slow. Here's my take on how to speed up laminating...Once you put your page in to be laminated, do something else, like read facebook, or cut something out. Whenever I do something else while laminating, each page seems to laminate quicker! And I feel like I'm chasing my tail to get the new page in. Don't sit and watch it go in because it will take f.o.r.e.v.e.r!

    1. Ok... I LOVE the idea of having dueling laminators (think banjos). That would help! I do try to multi-task, but sometimes I just want it done... dang it! Ha!

  4. I LOVE, LOVE my Scotch laminator! I have tried other brands, but this one is my favorite by far! The only thing that I wish is that it would laminate items larger than letter size. To be able to laminate while I am at home is one of the best gifts I have given to myself!

  5. Girl, I have the Scotch one and have wanted to see if there are better laminators out there. But after seeing this, I am thinking my Scotch one is the best. It really does a good job, it is just sooooooo SLOW! Let me know if you find a better one!

  8. I didn't know so many people had laminators at home. I laminate everything at school. I think my husband would kill me if I buy one more thing for school. Do your husbands say anything to you about all the money you sink into school? Just wondering.

    2. I have a little purple cow for at home and its great for the small stuff but I now am looking for a good one for my school. I am a special ed teacher so I laminate EVERYTHING. I do a lot of small stuff like 1" by 1" squares but at school we also do lots of posters so I know I want something around 27" I have been looking everywhere to try and fined what would work best a hot or cold laminator. With the hot one we have at school now trying to feed in all my small stuff is really hard ( or so I have been told we are not aloud to do our own laminating I guess the teachers use to break it to much :( ) I always need to make extra of whatever I am doing because some always end up over lapping or stuck together. I wanted to know how the one at your school is. Or if anyone has any suggestions I am a new teacher ( my 2nd year) and I have been the one pushing for a laminator we can all use so I don't have to wait a week to get stuff done and then have the guy who is aloud to do it get mad at me because doing 200 1" by 1" squares was really hard. I dont want to think about the faces I will get when I give him my 300 flash cards next week so any advice would help that you!

  16. I have a Scotch laminator that I got for Christmas. Oh, the wish list of a teacher!! :) Our school one totally stinks! It's older than Moses and last time I used it, it literally sucked up my shirt. No lie!!! I was flippin' out!! It was totally crazy!! SO, I just use my trusty 'ole scotch one now. The lamination is much better anyway! The school one is wrinkled and curls up anything that you put through it!

    1. I just laughed out loud! A few years ago a friend of mine came to help me get ready for school. I showed her the laminator. She came back to my room all disheveled. The little plastic tips to her hoodie were sucked into the laminator... That is straight-up horror show material...like Final Destination or something.

I am glad you made it out alive Amanda!

    2. We had a male teacher get his tie stuck in the laminator several years ago. I guess he could not reach the power button (or did not know how to turn it off). He yelled for help and the office staff ran in, turned off the laminator, and cut him free. I guess it got pretty scary! (So funny to think about though, I am horrible). After that, they wouldn't let you laminate your own things. Two people on staff would do it for everyone. It sounds like the school laminators are rallying against us!.

  17. I have a question for you ladies. I have considered purchasing a laminator for home but have wondered if I'd spend more on pouches than just taking my things to Lakeshore to laminate at 29 cents per square foot. Has anyone else done this?

  18. I have the same Scotch laminator...one at home and one at school! I think one of them is on the fritz so I'll be checking Amazon and ordering another when the price is low enough! I also buy my laminating pouches on Amazon (the lowest price I've paid was $9 for 100). They are MUCH cheaper than Sam's Club and are a tad bit larger too!

I have been laminating my stuff there too, but when you factor in the driving time and gas it really is worth it to do home lamination!

Thanks for the suggestion Deedee, I am definitely going to get myself a Scotch model. :)

  20. Oh I am so happy with your conclusion!! I have the Scotch laminator but I was just about to fork over $100 bucks if you happen to say it worked better. I use our laminator all of the time....HOWEVER....I started going to Lakeshore with big jobs. It saves my sanity to just laminate with the big boy when I have big jobs. Great review :)

  21. I bought a Purple Cow laminator as Sam's or Costco when it was on sale for $14.95. I think it sells regularly for $19.95. I got it last fall and have been happily laminating at home ever since. I hate having to wait for things to be laminated by someone at school, since they don't let mere mortal teachers touch the big laminating machine for fear of messing it up! It has been a workhorse. I'm so surprised that something that cheap can do such a great job!

  22. I bought a cheap laminator on amazon after I got something stuck in my old one. I thought I would like it because it was bigger and would take less time. It's terrible! One complaint was that it gets too hot but I can't get mine to get hot enough to work! I think I'll invest in the Scotch one! Thanks!!

I do have a whole system though to save time. Start laminating one sheet while you are filling the rest of the pouches. As one finishes, put a new one in and continue getting the rest ready. Once you're done with that, start cutting while you are feeding new ones though the machine. It gets a little hectic, but I always seem to finish laminating just about the same time as I am finished cutting all of the sheets!

  23. We have 5 kindergartens at my school and 4/5 of us have a laminator! We love the Scotch laminator - which you can buy from Scholastic Book Clubs with your points, btw - but I also have a no-name laminator that I bought from ALDI for $20. During the fall and spring they usually have them as well as lamination ($5/pack of 40). It takes a little longer than the Scotch to heat up and stay heated, but it works wonders for me!

    1. I have had the scotch laminator for several years and I love it. I like that the laminate is strongerr when it cools than the flimsy one we have at school. My homemade materials last much longer, plus I don't have to wait for my materials like I do at school.

  25. I have the newer scotch laminator that I got from Amazon for about $25. I buy the 200 sheets of laminating from Sams for $20. It was the BEST thing I've ever done for myself! It is SO much better than my school laminating and I can do it at night and on the weekend. I also don't have to justify to my principal what I'm laminating:)

  26. I don't even own a dang laminator!!!!! I am a horrible person who prints out my centers in ugly black and white... and then my kids ruin them... and then I throw them in the recycling bin... the next year I repeat the the process all over!

    I NEED TO GET BETTER!

I think I will buy that scotch laminator this summer :)

  27. Guess I am going shopping this week end:) I have made sooo many games this year & when the para (only person allowed to laminate) laminates, some things are not sealed or wrinkled. It just makes me feel ill when I think of the time I took to make the items, printing them on tag, in color from home. Guess laminating will be my other hobby at home. Will it re-seal the items from the school laminator?

  32. I have a Royal model PL2112 that I got with bonus points from Scholastic about 5 years ago. It works great and I've probably run through over 1000 sheets in the last couple of years. Heats up quickly and never peels. I have had a Scotch and like it too, but this model doesn't need a carry sheet to run pages through. No trouble so far with lots of use.

  34. I, too, have the same Scotch version from Wal-Mart and I wouldn't dream of trying anything else. Sure, it's slow... however I'm usually cooking supper and dashing from the stove top to the island where I feed in another pouch. It's all about the multi-tasking! :)

  35. I LOVE my laminator! My husband bought it for me for Christmas this year. :) I know - who wants a laminator for Christmas, but a teacher!?! He earned the best husband of the year award! Anyhow, mine is the GBC Ultima 35 EZ Load 12 Inch Roll Laminator. It is pricey! :( The best price I could find was at laminator.com with free shipping, and even there, the price has gone up. I figured the cost of buying pouches for the Scotch would offset the cost of the machine after a couple years of use. I am just not a pouch person. I hate stuffing those things! All I want to do is zip my pages through ! I use the 3 mil laminating film, and get a perfect seal every time. The 5 mil is a little thicker but has less on a roll. I buy my laminating film from Amazon. I cannot tell you how much I LOVE this machine. It heats up in one minute!! Yes, it fully heats in one minute! Total timesaver! I do not regret this purchase whatsoever! Deedee, you will love it! Now, I sound like a sales rep - HA!

  36. I have the purple cows one, but find that it doesn't heat up enough. Plust you can't laminate a whole piece of paper then cutit up. I can do that on our school one which saves me so much time

  37. I have the Purple Cows Hot and Cold Laminator, bought it at Costco for $20. I have used it tons this year. It's slow, but works great. One tip I learned from a Kinko's worker...is that if bring your laminate filled pockets to Kinko's you can use the laminator there for free. It's hotter and works quicker than my purple cow. I go there when I have lots.

  38. I love my Scotch Laminator too! I think I got mine at Target but around the same price as Amazon. I always order the pouches from Amazon though because they are SOOOO much cheaper.

We have a industrial laminator at my school but half the time it peels away. :( For most of my station stuff I prefer to have the "thicker" laminating film.

I'm actually laminating your Poetry Station as I'm typing this (multi-tasking at it's finest.)

I also just finished blogging about Sunday nights and how tonight my laminator is getting a major work out! LOL :)

  40. I have the same Scotch laminator. I absolutely LOVE it. I have had it for 5 years now. I use to buy the laminating pouches at Walmart which started to become very expensive since I use so many. About a year ago, I found them cheap on Amazon and buy them in bulk. They are not the Scotch brand, but made by Universal and are the same quality. I also hate the peeling that the large school laminator does.
