Writer's Workshop-Updates!

It has been too long since I have talked about writing...  Here's what shakin' in my room!

We spread out and we get busy!  This is serious work and we take it seriously!

We share with our partners EVERY Day!  Don't skip partner sharing... it is so important!

Our materials are kid friendly.  All of the paper options are available to the writers.  They have a choice on whether to write a book, a single page, or a how-to piece.  The books are made ahead of time, with single pages for those longer pieces.  The students know how to remove the staples to add pages.  (I still control the stapler and I staple at the end of the writing time).

By the way, this is the best staple remover.  It is super kid friendly and it does not rip the pages.  I got it at a teacher store, but I think I found the same one on Amazon.  Click here to see it.

We have been reading books with beautiful language.  We read In November and Scarecrow by Cynthia Rylant... LOVE! IT!   Miss C wrote in the footsteps of Cynthia Rylant.

Here is Mr. E's take on making gold.  I tried to tell him that he could give me some of the gold he made...  We will see if that happens.

This one made me say "Wow"...AND I got a tear in my eye (totally true).  With the holiday,  I think he work on this for a total of 5 school days.

How is writing going in your classroom?  If you are using our units, I would love to hear how it is going.

UPDATE:  Here are a few people who would love to share their student writing!  So Fun!   Will you let them know I sent you?

Peek at my Week-Gingerbread Freebies

Some of you already know that I was gone last week.   We were at my husband's change of command ceremony last week.  I am so proud of him!

So that had me off my "A" game the last few days.   I was thrilled that my substitute told me that my kiddos did great in my absence.  They are the BEST!

I got the exit isle on the airplane, so after I studied up on how to safely exit the airplane, I worked on a few things. Seriously,  I always look closely at how to open the door "in the event of an emergency."

I updated these two items...you can get the update at no additional charge

 and
Here are my lesson plans for next week... Can you tell we are in full Gingerbread mode?
There are a  few Freebies sprinkled in, so you might want to look for them!

Can I tell you how much I love clip art?   Love! It!

This young lady has some CUTE items!

If you have not seen them yet, check them out!

"How To" Writing!

We have been busy little beavers in our room. Here are a couple of samples.  One is from one of my more proficient students. The other is from one of my intervention sweeties.  Despite where they are with their transcription skills, they are both able to participate in this genre... I love it!

This young man has a lot of energy to write on this particular topic.  In fact he has LOTS of energy to write on all things that are Ninja, Transformers, or Mario related.  Do you have a few of these writers in your room?  Do I want to tell him that he can't write about a subject he is excited about? No! Way!

If you are following our writing units you can probably spot where my mini-lesson came in about adding warnings and helpful hints.

This young guy LOVES the bus!!!  You can see him on the bus.
Can you spot the bus driver? Hilarious! He will talk forever about the third person in this picture.  "Oh, that's J. He rides my bus.  His sister does too, but she's mean, so she is not in the picture."

You will notice that he does not have letter/sound association yet. He only knows a few sounds, so why would I expect him to have them in his writing?  However, this guy knows that letters make up words.  So he is now adding a string of letters.  If you sat by his side as he wrote these letters, you would see him stretching out the words and going through the motions. This is very encouraging!  As soon as he has letter/sound association, he will have the behaviors in place to apply them correctly.

What else can he do?  He can compose a coherent message in a sequential order!
Wonderful!

Can you see him getting off the bus?

What a perfect activity to include in our content area studies this week!  While I know we will be moving on past procedural texts soon, I also know I can always bring them back and revisit them.  My students understand how these type of texts work.

I hope you are having a great Pre-Turkey Day week!
