So here it is... the same resolution I have made for MOST of my adult (and childhood) life...
"This year I will be more physically active."
It is just NOT in my DNA... All of my favorite things involve inactivity... Reading, computer stuff, watching movies, eating ... (notice you do not see rock climbing?)
So the question for me is really... How do I make it obtainable?
I set a goal: Train for a 10k.
This little baby has me on my way.
This is a Couch-to-10k that I downloaded on my phone! You can find a ton of FREE apps that will help prepare you for 5k's, 10k's, or half marathon's.
| click on the picture to find this app |
Santa brought me this accessory too! This Nike Fuel band helps me track my daily activity and will remind me to keep moving even if I have had a day that was a little less active.
I am planning on also bringing more fitness into my classroom in 2013. According to the American Heart Association 1 in 3 children (ages 2-19) are overweight AND 1 in 6 are considered obese. This is 5 times higher than the obesity rates of 1974. I realize this is a complicated issue, but I feel an obligation to address this issue in my own way... How about in a fun way???
Kathleen from Growing Kinders introduced me to this AMAZING free web site. My kids BEG me to put it on at the end of the day! It seriously gets the blood moving! Each segment is 30 minutes long.
If you only have a few minutes or your kiddos need a brain break...they might like these little You Tube videos. A sweet teacher down the hall from me introduced me to Koo Koo Kanga Roo. I'm not kidding, my kinders L-O-V-E these! They have a bunch to pick from!
Ok... I HAD to add this link... THANK YOU Sarah!!!
We just did a little Kung Fu Fighting in my living room!

I am trying to run/walk everyday for an hour. I am hoping to get back into the shape I was after having my baby:)
ReplyDeleteBrisk walking for at least 30 minutes every day!
ReplyDeleteThank you (to you and Kathleen) for the Adventure to Fitness link! I can't wait to try it in class! I am like you....every year I make the same goal, and every year the fitness related resolution is the first to go. I hope to start running on a regular basis. Perhaps I will consider a 10K race like you are! Gosh! I wish I liked exercise more! Good luck!

ReplyDeleteThanks for the great website links! I've just bookmarked them to check them out with my Kindy kids this year. I downloaded that same app as you a month ago but the 5km version, but it's been too hot to use it at the moment (I'm in Australia and today it's 41 degrees, which is 105F, much too hot for exercise!)
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely new year!
I am going to use C25K too! And do more KooKooKangaroo with my kids!!!
ReplyDeleteKaci
Hi Deedee,
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting about these great links for the little ones.
My fitness goal is to get into the gym four days a week and lose weight. My husband and I made a bet, and I knew by doing that I would be successful. Gosh, I hope I am right! Ha!
Robyn
Good luck with your 10k training. I'm planning on completing a half marathon this year for the first time.
ReplyDeleteDanielle
I am going to have to try the links you suggested. I am also going to make time for me. No excuses! Also at our school are involved in a program called Gold Medal schools. We encourage the kids to run laps at the beginning of recess. We then translate the laps into miles. If we earn enough miles we are awarded Gold Medal status and a check to boot.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration!

ReplyDeleteThank you for the links, I can't wait to try them out! All the best for your New Years resolution.. I have a similar one. Hopefully in a years time we will both be running big distances!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the links! I've started the couch to 5k a dozen times and never finished it. This year it is my goal to finish it!
ReplyDeleteLove the exercise clip! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI will start my exercise video....it is great, but I have gotten so lazy! No excuses...
ReplyDeletekellybrown28021@gmail.com
I love your blog. Hope you have a wonderful 2013!
ReplyDeleteDiane
Thank you for sharing these great ways to get kids moving. So much research shows how important physical activity is to learning and as teachers we need to find ways to make it happen in the classroom since often more recess is not an option.
ReplyDeleteLove your fitness ideas! I am also guilty of sitting, reading blogs and watching tv all at the same time. Our school is in a area that stays cold and once we get snow....forget about going outside. I plan on starting some of these videos during our outdoor recess time. Thanks for sharing. )

Thanks for sharing that awesome website. At my school, the kids have to be up and moving for 30 minutes a day, even if it's raining, so I'm always looking for new ways to plan for indoor recess. Your plan for the 10k is inspiring! I have also always planned to make exercise a part of my life, but never seem to stick with the plan. Maybe I'll have to try a little harder this year. Thank you for always sharing your wonderful products and ideas! Good luck with the running and have a great new year!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great website for my classroom! I definitely need to work on my fitness routine! I have told myself I will walk or yoga after school. Now that I put it in writing I have to do it!

Thank you for the website tips! I'm always looking for ways to get active in my classroom! As for personal goals, running and getting rid of baby weight are my main goals this year. Good luck to you! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! I striving to find a balance this year I am committed to making that happen.
ReplyDeleteI plan on doing Zumba in my classroom everyday as well as doing it at home with my little ones. Going to try to make this a family affair!
ReplyDeleteMy husband bought me Pilates classes for Christmas. I think having it "scheduled" will help me stay on-track. I get lazy when I just work out at home!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the post, staying active is so difficult for me. I had my knee replaced 2 years ago and ever since then I have struggled with this. Thanks for the inspiration and for the classroom ideas too. I hope to get in the pool this winter since that is the way I like the best to stay active.
ReplyDeleteI love the Couch to 5K app on my phone. I used it for quite some time this past year until I hurt my ankle then my foot. Hoping to get back into running again this coming year.
ReplyDeleteI am headed over to check out the Adventures in Fitness. Looks like a lot of fun for my classroom.

I have the app on my phone too..just need to get better at using it! I love the Adventures in Fitness and so do my kiddos. It really helps on rainy days.
ReplyDeleteAdventure to fitness is great fun in the classroom. I would love to train for a 5k. That is one of my goals this year! Thanks for the giveaway!

I tried to the Couch to 5K once. Didn't happen. I have been most successful with walking. I have a treadmill but seem to do better when I make the time to walk outside.
ReplyDeletecmccain@ricecisd.org
Do you have a 10K on your calendar? It helps me to put a race on my calendar to work towards. Love the exercise for the kids videos- I need new ones to keep the interest. Mine love the just dance kids videos on youtube.

I am going to actually GO to the gym three times a week. My plan is to have a gym bag all set to go in my car so that I don't have to come home first... I have learned that once I set foot in the door of my house I will make any excuse not to leave :)
ReplyDeleteMary
Love the adventure to fitness link! Lots of indoor recess this time of year! I myself hope to get tone and be better about what I eat:) most importantly I hope to spend lots of family time together!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your idea of incorporating some type of fitness in your classroom at the end of the day! I will definitely be looking into Adventures in Fitness and KooKoo Kangaroo! We already sing and DANCE throughout the day, but would love to incorporate more fitness fun in my room. I think it is important to show kids that being active is FUN! I currently teach about 4 ZUMBA Fitness classes per week and plan to add a ZUMBAtomic (ZUMBA for Kids) class after school.
ReplyDeleteOh... Randee!!! How awesome it THAT!!! You ARE the ZUMBA queen!!!
DeleteI've also tried the Couch-to-10K and have found success. However, I never realized there was an app, which I will be downloading today as I need to get back into running. I love that you will be incorporating movement into your classroom. Check this site out for some great mix of songs that get kids dancing!

ReplyDeleteKatrina
I need to get out and walk more. My husband and I used to power walk 2-3 miles regularly. As the weather got colder and colder the walks tapered off. Gotta get out there again. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteI am going to try to be better about exercising this year. :) My first year teaching has been exercise in itself!

ReplyDeleteThanks for being a huge inspiration! I have resolved to "Just Do It". Easier said than done :). I have tried many things but ultimately it all comes down to being active. I will squeeze out 45 minutes of my day and follow through with these awesome exercise CDs I own. Wish you the best in 2013!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I have started juicing, eating better foods, and walking for 30 minutes a day.
ReplyDeleteI will use my pedometer every day. I will also start eating better.

My goal is to up my strength training and making fitness a priority rather than something I get to when I have the energy. I enjoy being active but feel so drained after teaching that I end up on the couch. :(
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to check out that website! I'd love to incorporate more fitness into my classroom, but it's hard to fit it all in my half-day schedule! mattandba@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteMy goal is to walk with my hubby and beagle every day the weather will allow.

I am going to continue what I started last year, eat healthy and exercise at least 150 min. A week. My students love Adventure to fitness! I use it when my students don't get their special. I use the dance videos on you tube for a brain break, the Gummi Bear song is a favorite. I like them because they are short so we do 2 or 3 and everyone is happy

I plan to get back to using my workout DVDs. I love that I can pick and choose from different ones I have and can do them at any time in my own home, I don't like gyms. I also like to ski in the winter so I know that I need to keep at least a little bit in shape throughout the other seasons. This doesn't always happen tho which is why I need to get back to those DVD's... ;)

ReplyDeleteWe've got to be good role models for kids...being chair potatoes at school sure doesn't do that. The videos will be great motivators. Lets all do an honesty check every month and see where we are! Karen

Love your resolution and the tools you are using to help you get there! I have my own gym membership and my terrible excuse is that it is too far from my house! But this year I hope to make better use of it or join a place where they have fun classes to take that don't make it seem like I'm actually working out. I would also love to run a 10K or even a half marathon! I ran cross country in high school and part of college and would like to get back into the swing of it! Good luck on your fitness goals!!

Oh, what fun! That's my forever new year's resolution, getting more active and I love that you are involving your class too! I found a bunch of you tube kid's dance videos that my class loves to jump up and move to. I will be adding the ones you have shared! Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteMichelle Reinke
Thank you for sharing the links. My kiddos will love them! As for me...we have a mini gym in our house (and have kept it in great condition, if you know what I mean). My husband got motivated to get in there and use it the last 6 mos or so of 2012. By cutting out his sweet tea and exercising an hour a day he has lost 65 lbs. Sooo we have a little challenge this year who can reach their goal first AND maintain it for 2013. Competitions get me motivated. I'll start with changing my intake to more water. However between teaching kinders and a 3 year old and 18 month old, I stay pretty busy!!
