I have been feeling the need to add some sentence dictation to my word study. I am hoping to reinforce the use of our word wall words and discuss some writing mechanics. I will also use this as an informal assessment. I have added some lines to my Word Explorers paper so I am not using another page for this quick activity. If you have previously purchased this unit, you can re-download it from TpT at no additional charge.
For writers workshop I will have my 4 focus students go through their writing folder and select a piece to share with the class. This may be a piece from a few days ago or just the previous day. As a class, we will help them select a writing goal (more spaces, stretching words more, rereading, telling more, or neater handwriting). I will write their goal on a sticky note. Then when we conclude writer's workshop, we will see if they applied their writing goal that day. We go to great lengths to make sure the student feels safe and I always give them the option to opt out of this process (but they never do... they LOVE it).
I have used this form of goal setting before and I have found it pretty powerful. Not only does it help the students who we focus on, other students also apply these goals to their own writing.
We are getting close to the end of our quarter, so my small groups are filled with assessments next week. I am hoping to have them completed by Wednesday.

Have a great week!

ReplyDeleteI love the idea of having focus students and setting goals for Writer's Workshop. I have a few students who would be very invested in this! I am going to try it this week. Thank you for sharing!
