I have been carrying around sheet of paper that helps explain kindergarten writing to parents. I have FINALLY adapted it and plan on sharing it with my parents.
I would love your feedback! Also... please let me know if you notice a typo!
Every kinder parent should understand what we do with writing after reading this! I did notice that the last sentence in the 2nd paragraph has a typo. The first they should be the. Otherwise, it is great!! Thank you so much for sharing!
I love, love, love this!! I've been wanting to write something like this for my parents for the past 3 years, but I could never figure out just the right words to say. Thank you for doing that! It's wonderful!!! I'll be using this next year for sure! My parents ALWAYS want to correct their children, and often think they aren't learning anything because they can't spell "correctly." Maybe this will help! :)
Awesome! I think I'll use this and maybe adapt it a little bit. In my 2 years of teaching K, I've noticed that lots of parents are confused about temporary spelling, and they spell out words for their children on homework assignments. It kills me!
So great! I know I have lots of parents that look at me for guidance when trying to decipher their child's stories and sentences. This will help explain everything! Thanks so much!
I have been using the Stages of Development from Creating a Mulitiage Classroom for years; back when I taught multiage. I've always loved it because of the visuals. I like yours too because of it. Many parents have a hard time understanding this. You did a great job explaining.
Here's the link, just in case you want to "preview" some of the book. http://books.google.com/books?id=luSNTATU7GwC&pg=PA201&lpg=PA201&dq=multiage+book+stages+of+writing&source=bl&ots=TeHMX_ALTE&sig=xGv56jg5PoB_cJam50TYm0nPR4Y&hl=en&ei=xJ0XTo3HDIPL0QH08PSWBQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CC0Q6AEwAw#v=onepage&q=multiage%20book%20stages%20of%20writing&f=false
This is a wonderful explanation for parents. It sure beats me stammering around at orientation trying to explain it to them. This makes a great visual aid. http://teacherblogstalker.blogspot.com
Sylvia! That looks like an AMAZING book! Then I looked on Amazon... over $100.00! Yowza! Don't you love the price of out of print books. The preview is awesome! I'll stick to that!
I love your blog and I love your ideas. I will definitely use this during our beginning of the year conferences and I will be sure to share and give a copy to my co-workers. Excellent job. Thanks so much!
This is wonderful, thank you so much!! Besides giving it to parents, I am going to sneak it into my Principal's box. Last year she was insistent that our Pre-K'ers wrote perfectly, no spelling mistakes, in a straight line with no dancing letters, etc. Let's just say she and the teachers butt heads a bit over it. Thanks again!!
What a nice introduction for parents! I haven't used the term "temporary spellings" before. It's the perfect way to describe the process to parents! hugs!! ~Tracy
OMG, Deedee!!! This is the BEST freebie I've found in a long time!!! I ♥ it!!! Thank you SOOOO much for sharing this!!! You are AMAZING!!!!;) Little Warriors
This is absolutely perfect. I love that you were you able to communicate what a million K teachers have been wanting to say to their parents in such a wonderful manner. Thanks!
WOW!!!! you are so sweet for posting this! I send home a letter similar to this one but I like yours a lot more. thank you so much for sharing! You're too kind!
Thank you! My school frowns a bit on "sound spelling", but I have no problem; as you said, it provides the opportunity to discuss and learn. The English language is quite challenging, you know?! :-)
Wow! A great letter! Thanks for sharing! I really could use this come September and the endless times I have tried to explain writing in Kindergarten! Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
I Love this! Thanks so much for sharing. I can't wait to use it. It is always helpful to have something to show parents what the expectations are, especially when their child is not meeting the expectations. Tawnya
Deedee, This is a wonderful resource. I am always looking for ways to help parents understand why we do what we do, as well as what their children are doing. I will definitely be using this. I also have a letter from Donna Whyte called Deer Pair Ants. I'll go post that on my blog to share as well..it would go great with your resource. Thanks for all you do! Fantastic! I will be sharing this for sure. I really liked how you showed examples of the progression in writing during a school year with an age appropriate writing sample. Thanks so much for what you do and sharing with others :-)
