Kindergarten Word Study Pacing Guide

Our district has been working hard to formulate pacing guides for our word study.  We do not follow a basal, so we had to create something on our own.  Creating this guide was a collaborative effort.  I then typed it into this document.

For our letter/sound study we use Fundations by Wilson Learning.  I'm not really in love with it, but one benefit we have is that our entire building uses it.  This is helpful especially for our fragile learners, as the key word for a is apple /a/, b bat /b/...  This is the same key word the students see in kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade...

For my sight words and word families I like to use a variety of resources.  However, the bulk of my explicit instruction comes from Word Explorers.

I am curious... How do you decide your scope and sequence for word study?  What resources do you use in planning and teaching?

  1. Great work! Thank you for sharing! I explained my literacy blocks on a recent post where I included my daily schedule. It's definitely not a complete overview of what I do with language arts, but it's a snapshot.

  3. Wow, thanks for sharing! My school district uses the Houghton Mifflin Reading series, but I'm always looking for resources to help supplement my instruction. We are switching from using the DRA and HM Phonics/Decoding Screening as our benchmark assessments, to AIMSweb, so we will see how that changes instruction and assessment.

  5. We used to use the DRA and have switched in the last two years to the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System. I like the new benchmarking kit better than the previous DRA kit. We have also been trained at the Kindergarten level in using the LLI program which will be a Tier 2? intervention once we get all of our RTI things rolling next year. Being trained on AIMSweb in a couple weeks so I will let you know how that training goes as well!

  8. We base our letter study on our letter identification tests and begin with the most known letters first to give kids a sense of accomplishment right off the bat. We do 2 letters and 2 sight words a week, then do word families after Christmas. Our school use the "Word Detective" program created by a teacher in a neighboring district and it is used K-4. It teaches vowel rules to help student decode. When it come to our phonemic awareness, we do rhyming, syllables, beginning sounds, ending sounds, phoneme counting, segmenting and blending (not in this order, though). We also start Literacy Work Stations in November and begin guided reading after DRA's at the end of December/first of January.

    Thank you for your comments. It does not look like we are that far off. We do start guided reading earlier. For the first few weeks, it is more about concepts about print. We also get our stations going earlier, but in the beginning they focus is just getting into the routine. Whew! The first few weeks of school is a little crazy!

I am working with a brand new school and we are just forming out K program. Would LOVE to peak at what you do as I begin to start shaping a new school. Thanks again for your blog and generosity.     In Europe we use a program called Jolly Phonics? Have you heard of it? The letters are introduced in a way that children can spell the most combinations of CVC words. I really like the program, except for the songs with a British accent. ;-) I just sing over them very loudly. I hadn't heard of Fundations. What is it that you don't like about it?
    Thanks for everything you do! You are amazing. YOu have helped me so much with my multi-language learners. All of your activities are so visually stimulating for them.

  12. DeeDee I LOVE YOU! I seriously cannot express how helpful this is. My curriculum doesn't include a yearlong scope and sequence, and it's been having us do beginning sounds for like the past three months. I wasn't sure where to take my kiddos next, so this is REALLY helpful. Thank you so much!

  13. Thanks Mrs. Wills. I am looking at putting together a pacing guide. I changed schools last year and I feel I need a structure to follow this year. Previously i have done 2 letters a week working from A to Z. I have found that my struggling students are able to say the letters in order - in order to figure out what letter they need. I have done the letters out of order but it seems to leave those who struggle behind. You do amazing work. Thanks again.

    1. It is pretty close to the same thing. That is the order we go in. We kicked it up a notch with the CCSS, but we do cover all of those things.

  15. I just read this post. We also use Fundations and have to use it to the fullest, and I'm not the biggest fan of it either. It takes 20-30 minutes of my 1 hour block of ELA (sight words, comprehension, writing) so not a lot of time to do it all! (I also find that it lacks in working on beginning sounds.) Most of our sight words come from Fundations' trick words and those come at the end of the program so I introduce some of the old reading series' sight words earlier in the year.
